Rules

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE RULES BELOW COULD RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

Official online entries must be completed in their entirety. ALL entries must be registered with a dance studio and represented by a studio owner or director. NO independent entries are permitted to compete in ANY division. Studio owners/directors must check the release clause on every official entry submitted. All entries must be submitted online through the “STUDIO CENTER.” Entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be limited to the amount of performance time available. Once a competition is announced as SOLD OUT, a non-refundable 25% deposit fee based on the 100% entry fee will be required of studios who would like to guarantee their entries. The method of payment must be the same for both deposit and balance. Any cancellations of entries will result in a loss of all deposits and entry fees for that event. There will be a $15 late fee per act after the deadline date. No entries will be processed without full payment. NEW: Only Visa, Master Card, money orders and cashier’s checks are accepted. Individual personal checks and studio checks will not be honored. Payments made after the deadline date must be in the form of a credit card payment only. All balances must be paid in FULL prior to the competition. Absolutely NO payments will be accepted at the competition event. KAR reserves the right to add additional competition days and/or move the competition location due to unforeseen circumstances. KAR also reserves the right to cancel any event that does not meet the minimal number of acceptable entries. In the event of a cancelled competition, all entry fees will be refunded. There will be NO refunds for entries if the required minimum number of acts are registered and the competition has been confirmed.
Admission is free and the general public is welcome to all events. Doors will open exactly 30 minutes prior to the first scheduled act. The use of ANY electronic device for photography & videography is STRICTLY PROHIBITED during all performances. Failure to comply with this rule may result in a point deduction to the act being recorded and/or photographed as well as confiscation of the recordings and/or photographs. It is the responsibility of the studio owner/director to inform their students and parents of the NO photo/video rule. No food, drinks or smoking is allowed in the competition performance area or inside the contracted venue. All participating teachers, dancers and spectators are expected to display good sportsmanship. Failure to comply could result in immediate disqualification and loss of privileges to participate in future KAR competitions.

TYPES OF ENTRIES

Solos
Duets/Trios (Duets and Trios will compete against each other)
Small Groups (4-9 performers)
Large Groups (10-19 performers)
Lines (20 or more performers)
Super Lines (15 or more performers – may include performers of all levels)
Productions (15 or more performers – may include performers of all levels)

NEW: Division types are determined by the actual number of participants competing on stage at the competition, regardless of participants originally registered. An entry that changes its division type during the competition may be subject to compete as “adjudication only” at the Competition Director’s discretion.

AGE DIVISIONS

Age Divisions are as follows: 4 & under, 5-6, 7-8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15-16, 17-19 and Adult 20 & over. AGE DIVISIONS ARE DETERMINED AS OF THE JANUARY 1ST CUT OFF DATE. The 2017 November and December competitions are considered the beginning of the 2018 competition season. Therefore, registered ages of all entries (Title entries included) must be bumped up to the dancer’s age as of January 1, 2018. The average age will determine the age division for Duets/Trios, Groups, Lines, Super Lines and Productions. When determining the average age of an act, always drop the decimal. Contestants will be responsible for showing proof of age to the Competition Director should a question arise. For National Finals, substitution of dancers from the Regional qualifying entry is permitted in all divisions/categories except Solos. Performances must be comprised of at least 50% of the original dancers from the Regional qualifying entry. When substituting dancers in a performance, be aware that any modifications may change the level or age average. All music must remain the same.

LEVELS AND GUIDELINES

The level of performance (NOVICE, PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE, ELITE, TEACHER and ADULT) should be determined at the discretion of the studio owner/director using the given guidelines below. Only count years of competition experience from the age of 7 and above.
NOVICE LEVEL – Dancers who take a maximum of 3 hours of dance class per week. This level is for novice and non-competitive dancers. Solos, Duets/Trios, Adults, and Teachers may not compete in the NOVICE LEVEL. NOVICE dancers can only perform in a maximum of 3 NOVICE performances. NOVICE dancers cannot compete in the SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE or ELITE levels. NOVICE dancers may perform in a PRIMARY level Group and/or Line as well as in the non-leveled Super Line and Production categories. Overall High Point awards will be presented in the age groups of 8 & under, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-19 in the Small Group, Large Group and Line categories. All NOVICE level acts are ineligible for Top Studio awards and cash prizes.
PRIMARY LEVEL – Dancers with 0 to 2 years of competition experience who are 14 years of age or under. This level is designated for the younger, less experienced competitive dancer. Overall High Point awards will be presented in the age groups of 8 & under, 9-11, and 12-14 in the Solo, Duet/Trio, Small Group, Large Group and Line categories. There will be no cash prizes awarded in the PRIMARY level.
SECONDARY LEVEL – Dancers with 2 to 4 years of competition experience. If a dancer has 4 or more years of competition experience and is age 12 or above, the INTERMEDIATE level should be considered. Overall High Point awards and cash prizes will be presented in the age groups of 8 & Under, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-19 in the Small Group, Large Group and Line categories. Solos and Duet/Trios Overall High Point winners will receive the new PULSE Scholarship.
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL – Dancers with 4 to 7 years of competition experience. If a dancer has 7 or more years of competition experience and is age 15 or above, the ELITE level should be considered. Overall High Point awards and cash prizes will be presented in the age groups of 9-11, 12-14 and 15-19 in the Small Group, Large Group and Line categories. Solos and Duet/Trios Overall High Point winners will receive the new PULSE Scholarship.
ELITE LEVEL – Dancers with at least 7 years of competition experience and generally 14 years of age or older. Dancers in the ELITE level should display higher technical skills and abilities than INTERMEDIATE level dancers. Overall High Point awards and cash prizes will be presented in the age groups of 12-14 and 15-19 in the Small Group, Large Group and Line categories. Solos and Duet/Trios Overall High Point winners will receive the new PULSE Scholarship.
TEACHER LEVEL – Any act in which a teacher 20 years of age or above performs. Student teachers ages 19 or under must compete in other competitive levels. Overall High Point awards will be presented.  All TEACHER level performances are ineligible for Top Studio Awards or cash prizes. 
ADULT LEVEL – Any act which consists of at least one non-teaching adult age 20 or above. Overall High Point awards will be presented. All ADULT level performances are ineligible for Top Studio Awards and cash prizes. 
Averaging Levels: In the level placement of Duets/Trios, Groups and Lines, competition experience must be averaged. Age and technical ability must also be considered. A Soloist may only compete in different levels with routines consisting of non-related dance disciplines.  A dancer may only compete in a maximum of two levels. These levels also must be consecutive; therefore skipping a level is not allowed. For example: A SECONDARY level dancer may also compete in either the PRIMARY or INTERMEDIATE level, but can never compete in the PRIMARY, SECONDARY and INTERMEDIATE levels (competing in 3 levels in not allowed). A SECONDARY level dancer may never compete in the ELITE level because this would be skipping a level, which is not allowed. The only exception to this rule is in the Super Line and the Production categories, which are non-leveled performance categories.
If a Small Group, Large Group or Line has a mix of different dancers and level abilities, the act may only compete one level lower than the highest leveled dancer. For example: If an ELITE level dancer is in a mixed-leveled Group or Line, this performance can only compete in the INTERMEDIATE level and not in the SECONDARY level. Therefore, a dancer can only compete in a maximum of two consecutive level abilities and may never skip a level. In mixed-leveled entries, at least 50% of the dancers must be registered in the level they are competing in, with the exception of Duets. Duets must compete in the highest (age-appropriate) level of the two dancers. Since a dancer cannot skip a level and a Duet must compete in the higher of the two levels, a SECONDARY level dancer MAY NOT compete a duet with an ELITE level dancer and a PRIMARY level dancer MAY NOT compete a duet with an INTERMEDIATE or ELITE dancer. If 50% of dancers in a Group are in one level and 50% in another, the Group must compete in the higher of the two levels. When a Solo, Duet/Trio, Group or Line is awarded a First Overall High Point Award at a National Finals, this exact Solo, Duet/Trio, Group or Line must move up to the next level for the following season. Please contact our office if you need further clarification of our levels and guidelines. Any infractions of the rules and regulations may result in point deductions and/or disqualification.
 

PERFORMANCE TIME LIMITS

Solos and Duets/Trios have a 2:45 minute performance time limit. Solos, Duets and Trios are not permitted extended performance time. Small Groups have a 3:00 minute performance time limit. Large Groups & Lines have a 4:00 minute performance time limit. Super Lines have a 5:00 minute performance time limit. Productions have an 8:00 minute performance time limit. Extended performance time is available (up to 1:00 minute for a fee of $3.00 per performer) for Small Groups, Large Groups, Lines, Super Lines and Productions.
Dancers are expected to perform in the order published, unless granted special permission by the Competition Director or pre-approved by the KAR office administration prior to the competition. Unauthorized delay of the performance schedule may result in a point deduction and/or disqualification. Dances not performing within 10 acts after their scheduled performance time may not be eligible for Overall High Point awards, unless pre-approved by the KAR office administration or by the Competition Director. Incompleted acts may result in point deductions or be scored lower by the judging panel. An act that re-performs may only be re-adjudicated if during the original performance, the technical error was committed on KAR’s behalf. If the original performance is not completed, the act will receive an automatic First Place award and is ineligible for high point awards.
A tentative schedule with the performance time of each act will be available via the online “Studio Center” one week prior to the competition. Contestants in the first 10 scheduled acts should arrive ready to perform in full costume, hair and make-up. All other competing dancers must be ready to perform at least one hour prior to their scheduled performance time. **If the competition is running ahead of schedule, dancers are expected to perform in the order of the program and/or when called upon backstage.
NEW: SET-UP TIME LIMITS
Solos, Duets, Trios, Small Groups and Large Groups are expected to set-up props in 30 seconds and remove props in 30 seconds (1:00 minute cumulative). Lines and Super Lines are expected to set-up props in 1:00 minute and remove props in 1:00 minute (2:00 minutes cumulative). Productions are expected to set-up props in 2:30 minutes and remove props in 2:30 minutes (5:00 minutes cumulative). If prop set-up/removal exceeds these time limits, performances may be subject to point deductions. An additional 1:00 minute total for set-up/removal of props may be purchased for a flat fee of $25.00. Solos, Duets and Trios are not permitted extended prop set-up/removal time.
MANDATORY MUSIC UPLOAD
KAR uses an electronic music file upload system for all performances. Studios have access to their own Music Manager upload page within their Studio Center on the KAR website. It is mandatory for all studios to submit their competition music electronically using the Music Manager.

  • Music files can only be uploaded after entries have been registered.
  • The Music Manager will assign the file names automatically once upload is complete. However, please label the file with the name of the act.
  • Please be sure to upload the exact version of your performance music, because pitch/speed of music cannot be adjusted at the event.
  • KAR supports MP3, M4A, and MP4 files. The maximum file size is 20MB.
  • Uploaded music files must be DRM free.
  • Music Manager will be closed 3 days prior to the start of competition. KAR will not accept new versions of music files at the competition. KAR will only use backup media formats (CD, iPod, USB) if there are technical difficulties.
  • KAR requires that all studios bring a backup CD, iPod, or USB for all performances in the event of a malfunction of the original music submitted. Music can be picked up at the registration table at the conclusion of each presentation of awards. CD’s that are not claimed at the end of the competition will be discarded unless previous arrangements were made with the KAR office.

CATEGORIES OF DANCE

BALLET – Performance must contain ballet technique incorporating formal classical movements.
POINTE – Performance must consist of pointe/toe technique (NOVICE or PRIMARY level dancers may not compete in this category).
JAZZ – Performance must consist of jazz technique; splits and floor rolls are permissible.
TAP – Performance must use taps on shoes and display tap technique.
LYRICAL – Performance must have dynamic emotion and expressive movements demonstrated with fluidity, balance, extension and control.
MODERN – Performance must consist of interpretive movements using modern technique such as natural movements focused on the “center” of the body, coordination between breathing and movement and a dancer’s relationship with the floor.
CONTEMPORARY – Performance must consist of a combination of modern dance lyrical and classical ballet elements.
FOLK/ETHNIC – Performances, which are to a significant degree bound by tradition with strong cultural roots.
IMPORTANT – In the above dance categories, only three acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible. An acro/gymnastic trick is defined as movements that pass through or stop at a fully inverted (upside down) position with both feet off the floor (the torso passing or stopping directly over the top of one’s head/shoulders). Forward/backward and shoulder rolls, are not considered acro/gymnastic tricks. Lifts with another dancer are also not considered an acro/gymnastic trick. A tumbling pass is considered one acro/gymnastic trick. Lip-syncing and talking should be kept to a minimum, so as not to portray a character. A point deduction may result for acts that do not comply.
ACRO/GYMNASTICS – Performance must use a combination of acro/gymnastic movements, such as walkovers, aerials, back handsprings, etc. and must incorporate dance technique.
SONG AND DANCE – Performance must consist of both singing and dancing of any type. KAR will only provide one handheld microphone. No additional sound equipment or microphones may be used or connected to KAR’s sound system.
POM-PON – Performance using pom-pons incorporating precise and definite movements.
NOVELTY – Performance featuring any style of dance that is novelty or theme based in nature portraying a recognizable character.
MUSICAL THEATRE – Performance featuring any style of dance from a Broadway, Movie or Television Show.
HIP HOP/FUNK – Performance demonstrating street style jazz incorporating hip hop and/or funk choreography. Acrobatics and break dancing are permissible.
OPEN – Performance demonstrating any style of dance or a combination of dance styles. Acrobatics/gymnastics is permissible.  
SUPER LINE – Performance must utilize at least 15 dancers incorporating any style of dance or combination of dance styles. This category is not divided by age and includes all levels of dancers. Overall High Point awards and cash prizes will be presented to the top scoring acts. Super Line performances can portray a theme or style of dance, but should not portray a storyline, plot or narrative. Each Super Line has a 5:00 minute time limit for performance and is given a maximum of 1:00 minute total for set-up and removal of props.
PRODUCTION – Performance must utilize at least 15 dancers incorporating any style of dance or combination of dance styles. This category is not divided by age and includes all levels of dancers. Overall High Point awards and cash prizes will be awarded to the top scoring acts. Adults and teachers are permitted to perform in the Production category. Production performances must portray a storyline, plot or narrative throughout, resembling that of a film, book, play, musical, etc. Props are mandatory and must be hand-held or free standing. Each Production has an 8:00 minute time limit for performance and is given a maximum of 5:00 minutes total for set-up and removal of props.

PERFORMANCE RULES

Dancers must perform in their scheduled order unless special permission is given by the Competition Director for costume changes. Points may be deducted from acts that do not comply. Dancers who do not perform within 10 acts of their scheduled time may be ineligible for Overall High Point awards. The only exception to this rule is if the KAR office administration has received prior notification or the Competition Director has pre-approved the delay. Dancers must perform their ENTIRE act on the stage. Performers may not enter or exit the stage from anywhere other than the wings. Starting, dancing, and ending the performance in the audience is not permitted. Jumping off the front of the stage is not permitted. Running in front of the judges’ table or approaching the panel of judges is also not allowed. No gifts can be presented to the judges in conjunction with a performance. For safety purposes, props and performers should never come within 1 foot of the stage edge. Special stage or house lighting will not be provided for any performance. Rehearsing on stage prior to the start of a competition or after the completion of a competition day is strictly prohibited. At no time are teachers, parents or dancers allowed to practice, rehearse or meet on stage. Failure to abide by the aforementioned rules may result in point deductions.

PROP AND SET RULES

Props are acceptable if they do not alter the backdrop, wings or the surface of the marley floor and can be easily removed following the completion of the act. Point deductions may result if the stage is not completely cleaned in the time permitted and/or the stage is not returned to its original pre-performance condition. For safety purposes, all props (hand-held or freestanding) are restricted to a maximum height of 15 feet. The use of safety railings is recommended. Hanging backdrops and special lighting may not be used. Helium balloons are only allowed if they are weighted and if permitted by the contracted venue. There is no guarantee that power outlets will be available for props that require electricity. Battery-operated props are recommended. If the weight of a prop exceeds the maximum weight limit for a stage, or if the Competition Director feels the weight of the prop is a safety hazard, the dancers will not be allowed to use the prop. When sliding props or moving scenery, do not alter or damage the backdrop, wings or marley dance floor. If the backdrop, wings or marley floor is damaged beyond repair, the studio owner/director will be responsible for its replacement.
Props must be loaded in and out of the venue on the same day they are used. Storing props in the wings or backstage is not allowed. KAR will not be responsible for props left overnight or unattended. Any special requests for the assembling of props must be discussed with the Competition Director upon arrival to the venue. All props MUST be labeled with the studio name for identification purposes.
IMPORTANT: Solos, Duets, Trios, Small Groups and Large Groups are expected to set-up props in 30 seconds and remove props in 30 seconds (1:00 minute cumulative). Lines and Super Lines are expected to set-up props in 1:00 minute and remove props in 1:00 minute (2:00 minutes cumulative). Productions are expected to set-up props in 2:30 minutes and remove props in 2:30 minutes (5:00 minutes cumulative). If prop set-up/removal exceeds these time limits, performances may be subject to point deductions. An additional 1:00 minute total for set-up/removal of props may be purchased for a flat fee of $25.00. Solos, Duets and Trios are not permitted extended prop set-up/removal time.
IMPORTANT: PROHIBITED/UNACCEPTABLE PROPS

  • Fire (including candles, matches, lighters), fireworks (including sparklers), explosives, swords, knives, weapons and use of animals are strictly prohibited. Toy weapons are acceptable. However, toys may not fire projectile objects or have blunt points or sharp edges. Hover boards and motor vehicles are not allowed. All props should be non-toxic substances. No form of liquid, gel, powder, glass objects, aerosol cans of any type (including hairspray or spray paint) or similar substances may be used that will physically alter the backdrop, wings or surface of the marley floor.
  • Prohibited items include: water (on body, costume, or prop), wet paint (on body, costume, or prop), fake blood, fake snow, silly string, bubbles, confetti, streamer or confetti cannons, loose feathers, candy, chalk, crushed cork, flour, corn starch, loose glitter (on body, costume or prop), sand, sawdust, dry ice or any other similar substances. Any act that uses a substance that is not permitted and creates a safety hazard for performers or on the marley floor may be penalized and/or disqualified at KAR’s discretion. Please contact the KAR office if you need further clarification on our prop and set rules.
  • Special note regarding rosin: Rosin must be self-contained and cannot be applied to shoes on marley floor. If a performance is requesting to use rosin, KAR must know upon registration so that schedule adjustments can be made to clean up the marley residue post-performance. There may be point deductions if KAR is not notified about the rosin usage and the marley floor is affected during the act.

JUDGING AND SCORING CRITERIA

Contestants must agree that all decisions of the panel of judges are final. Contestants must also agree that the time, manner, and method of judging the competition is at the discretion of Kids Artistic Revue. If a studio has any protests or complaints, the studio owner/director must submit an “Infraction Review Form” to the Competition Director 30 minutes prior to an awards segment. In the event that an infraction was overlooked during a Regional competition, it will be taken into account at National Finals. Score sheets will only be available to studio owners/directors in the “Studio Center.”
Each performance will be evaluated on the following five judging elements:
1.) Technique – 40 points total
2.) Stage Presence – 25 points total
3.) Execution of Performance – 20 points total
4.) Choreography – 10 points total
5.) Overall Appearance – 5 points total

Production performances will be evaluated on the following judging elements:

1.) Technique – 30 points total

2.) Overall Entertainment Value – 25 points total

3.) Stage Presence – 20 points total

4.) Execution of Choreography – 15 points total

5.) Costume – 10 points total

There is a maximum of 100 points per judge and the total points attainable varies per level. If a dance, costume, or music is deemed inappropriate for family viewing by the judging panel, it will be scored lower by judges and may not be eligible for Overall High Point awards. Ties will not be broken for the general competition awards. However, all ties will be broken for Special and Overall High Point awards.

GENERAL AWARDS

Each act that performs will receive a score from a panel of three predetermined judges at Regional competitions and five to eight judges at National Finals. General awards are based on composite scores and not on placement within an age group in each category. This may result in multiple Elite Top First, Top First, and First Place awards presented in each age group for each category. Each act will receive one trophy per performance and individual award pins for the dancer(s) in the act. Although acts are competing against an adjudicated point system for general awards, all contestants will compete against each other for the Overall High Point awards within their level and age division. If there is only one act competing in a particular division, that act will be judged against a point system. The point break for all given awards is determined by the scoring range of that particular competition. Any act that performs outside of its original scheduled performance time, will receive general award placements at its assigned awards ceremony.

HIGH POINT AWARDS AND CASH PRIZES

New in 2018: High Point Emblems and The PULSE Dance Experience scholarships will be presented to the top scoring Solos and Duets/Trios in the SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels. KAR has partnered with The PULSE and Camp PULSE to offer exciting weekend workshops with some of the hottest teachers and choreographers. Solo scholarships are valued at a maximum of $285 and Duet/Trios will receive a gift card in the amount of $100 per dancer to use towards a PULSE Event. All scholarships and gift cards can be redeemed for the 2018-2019 PULSE season. Please refer to the PULSE website for additional details on their upcoming tour at www.pulsedanceexperience.com. Cash prizes will not be awarded to Solos and Duet/Trios with this exclusive opportunity and partnership.
High Point Emblems and cash awards will be presented to the top scoring Groups and Lines in the SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels. High Point Emblems and cash awards will also be given to the highest scoring SUPER LINE and PRODUCTION entries. Cash awards will always be given to the overall winner regardless of the number of entries in each division. All cash awards will be presented to the studio director/teacher. No cash awards will be given in the NOVICE, PRIMARY, TEACHER or ADULT levels (only a High Point Emblem will be awarded). All acts must perform on the same day and before their awards ceremony to be eligible for Overall High Point awards. If an act does not compete on the scheduled day and time, only a general award will be given, unless pre-approved by the office administration or Competition Director. Entries received after the program is printed are also ineligible for High Point Awards. Overall High Point awards will be divided into 4 age divisions: 8 & under, 9-11, 12-14, 15-19 and 20 & above. Dancers who have more than one Solo can only place once in the Overall High Point awards. The exact same Duet/Trio contestants may only place once in the Overall High Point awards. Should an act drop below the minimum number requirement for the group size during the competition, it will compete for adjudication only and remain ineligible for Overall High Point awards. Should an act drop below the minimum number requirement for the group size after the program is printed and KAR is notified before the start of the competition, the act may compete in the appropriate division and time for eligibility. NEW: Any routine that placed first overall in the High Point Awards at National Finals and/or was awarded National Grand Champion in the 2017 Star Showcase cannot compete with that exact routine at a 2018 Regional or National Finals competition. To be considered the “exact routine”, the performance MUST (1.) contain 75% of the original dancers and choreography (2.) be registered in the same level and age division and (3.) utilize the original music selection. Any entry that does not comply may be disqualified. KAR 2017 November and December Competitions are considered part of the 2018 competition season.

ADDITIONAL AWARDS

MOST PHOTOGENIC AWARD – These awards will be presented to the contestants judged to be “most photogenic” based on the following criteria: Visual appeal, expressiveness of the dancer, age appropriateness, composition, lighting and quality of the photo. For each Regional competition, there will be one “Junior Most Photogenic” winner (age 11 & under) and one “Senior Most Photogenic” winner (age 12 & above). All entries must submit a recent photo – no larger than 8′ x 10′ – labeled with name, age, address, phone number and studio name on the back. Only registered KAR contestants enter the Photogenic competition. All entry fees and photos must be submitted at the competition at least one-hour prior to the final SECONDARY Group/Lines awards ceremony. Absolutely no mailed photos or photogenic entry fees will be accepted in the KAR office. Each winner will be announced and presented with a plaque and an award certificate. All photos not claimed at the registration table by the conclusion of the competition will be discarded unless previous arrangements were made with the KAR office. “Most Photogenic” winners from each 2018 Regional competition must email the winning photo to photos@dancekar.com no later than October 1, 2018. At National Finals, all photogenic entries must be in FULL-COLOR. All Regional and National winning photographs will not be returned.
KAR CONVENTION SCHOLARSHIP – Scholarships are presented to one or more outstanding soloist(s) in the PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE, and ELITE levels. Each winner receives a full-tuition scholarship to attend any of the 2018 KAR Dance Conventions. The “KAR Dance Convention Scholarship” is not valid for in-house conventions, is non-transferrable and cannot be redeemed for studio credit.
BEST COSTUME AWARD – These awards will be presented to group performances in each of the PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE, and ELITE levels based on design, originality, fit and appropriateness. All Group and Line entries are eligible for this award. “Best Costume” winners will receive a plaque.
MOST ENTERTAINING AWARD – These awards will be chosen by the panel of judges and presented to Groups and/or Lines deemed to be “most entertaining” in the PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels. “Most Entertaining” acts will receive a plaque.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK AWARD – These awards are presented in the PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels to the judges’ favorite “Most Entertaining Act” winners. Each winner will receive a plaque and an award certificate. Each “Video of the Week” winner will have their performance featured on the KAR website for a voting contest. Preliminary voting will take place weekly from Tuesday to Friday following the Regional competition. At the conclusion of the 2018 Regional tour, a final voting contest for “Video of the Year” will take place in July 2018. The final winners of the “Video of the Year” award will be announced on July 2018.
JUDGES’ CHOICE AWARDS – These awards will be presented to Groups and/or Lines displaying standout qualities during their performances in the NOVICE, PRIMARY and SECONDARY levels. Each winning act will receive award pins and a plaque. At National Finals, the INTERMEDIATE level is also eligible for these awards.
ALL STAR DANCERS NYC – The recipients of this award are invited to be part of “The New York City Dance Experience”. All dancers 9 years of age & above from the PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels are eligible for this award. These special invitations are presented to “All Star Dancers” that display a passion for performing on stage. Winners will receive an informational brochure with details of “The New York City Dance Experience”.
ALL STAR DANCERS AUSTRALIA – The recipients of this award are invited to be part of “KAR/Rainbow Kids Australia”. All Overall High Point winners for Solos, Duet/Trios, Small Groups and Large Groups that average 12 years of age & above from the SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels are eligible for this award. These special invitations are presented to “All Star Dancers” that display a passion for performing on stage. Winners will receive a special invitation with details of “KAR/Rainbow Kids Australia”.
HOLLYWOOD DANCE INVITATIONAL AWARD – The recipients of this award are invited to participate in the Hollywood Dance Invitational. Eligible dancers must be at least 12 years old and compete with a Solo, Duet, Trio, Small Group and Large Group in the SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE or ELITE levels. This award is presented to dancers who display a passion for performing on stage. Winners will receive an informational brochure detailing the activities and opportunities that will be offered while in Hollywood, California.
ADCC (Association of Dance Conventions and Competitions) STUDIO OF EXCELLENCE AWARD – This award will be presented to the studio displaying the most studio spirit, enthusiasm and exceptional sportsmanship throughout the competition. The winning studio will receive a plaque along with a free annual membership to the Association of Dance Conventions and Competitions.
IDA (Industry Dance Awards) PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD – This award is presented to a Small Group, Large Group, Line, Super Line or Production that the judges decide best represents the entire competition with exceptional talent, choreography and showmanship. The winner will receive a plaque and an award certificate. All Regional “IDA People’s Choice Award” winners will be featured on industrydanceawards.com and will be in the running to be selected as a 2018 Top 5 Finalist. The weekly “IDA People’s Choice Award” winner will also be posted on the IDA website for final voting from June 2018 to July 2018. The final “IDA People’s Choice Award” winner will be announced on August 2018 at the Industry Dance Awards in Hollywood, California.
IDA (Industry Dance Awards) OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AWARDS – These awards are selected from the ELITE level Groups and Lines ages 12 & above with the highest overall score in the following categories:
Best Jazz Performance
Best Tap Performance
Best Hip-Hop Performance
Best Lyrical / Modern / Contemporary Performance
Best Novelty / Character / Musical Theatre Performance
Best Ballet / Open / Acro / Gymnastics Performance
All “IDA Outstanding Performance” winners will receive a plaque and an award certificate. These weekly winners will be in the running to be nominated for the 2018 Industry Dance Awards. The final “IDA Outstanding Performance” nominees will be announced on June 2018 on industrydanceawards.com. The Industry Dance Awards will take place August 15, 2018 in Hollywood, California.
TOP STUDIO AWARDS – A “Top Studio” award will be presented to one studio from each competitive level (PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE, ELITE) with the most Elite Top First place and Top First place general awards. To be eligible for this award, a studio must have a minimum of one act represented in the Solo, Duet/Trio and Group/Line divisions that perform in the same level of competition. In the event of a tie, the award will be given to the studio with the highest accumulated points. The “Top Studio” in each competitive level will receive a 3-foot trophy. The same criteria listed above will determine the “Top Studio” awards at National Finals. Each winner at National Finals will be awarded a 6-foot trophy and a Top Studio banner.

TITLE COMPETITION

The Title competition is open to soloists who pre-register for their respective Regional competition. NOVICE level dancers and dancers age 20 & above are also ineligible to compete in the Title competition. Soloists can pre-register for Title in the “Studio Center” prior to the Regional competition or register at the Regional competition prior to their scheduled performance. Only contestants that are listed in the printed program may register for Title. Soloists may enter one or multiple performances in the Title competition. A separate entry fee will apply for each Title performance. The Titles awarded are as follows:
Mr. Petite Dance and Miss Petite Dance: Soloists age 8 & under competing in the PRIMARY and SECONDARY levels only.
Mr. Junior Dance and Miss Junior Dance: Soloists age 9-11 competing in the PRIMARY, SECONDARY and INTERMEDIATE levels.
Mr. Teen Dance and Miss Teen Dance: Soloists age 12-14 competing in the SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels only.
Mr. Dance and Miss Dance: Soloists age 15-19 competing in the INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels only. 
Please note that the 2017 November and December competitions are considered the beginning of the 2018 competition season. Therefore, registered ages of all Title entries must be bumped up to the dancer’s age as of January 1, 2018.

Title performances will be evaluated on the following judging elements:

1.) Technique – 30 points total

2.) Overall Entertainment Value – 25 points total

3.) Stage Presence – 20 points total

4.) Execution of Choreography – 15 points total

5.) Costume – 10 points total

There is a maximum of 100 points per judge for a total of 300 points. Title scores will be determined at the same time as the Solo division. There will be two separate and unique score sheets; one for the Solo division and one for the Title division. Female winners will be presented with a tiara, a trophy and an award certificate.  Male winners will be presented with a cap, a trophy and an award certificate. Each Title runner-up will receive a tiara, or cap and an award certificate. All 2018 Regional Title winners and Title runner-ups will be eligible to compete for the 2018 National Title Competition at National Finals. All National Title winners are ineligible to compete for the same Title division the following competition season. National Title winners may only re-compete the following season if they have moved up in age division. Example: A 2017 “Miss Junior Dance America” winner may not compete at a Regional or National Finals as a “Miss Junior Dance”contestant during the 2018 season. However, a 2017 “Miss Junior Dance America” winner may compete as a “Miss Teen Dance” contestant at a 2018 Regional and National Finals if she has moved up to the Teen age division.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT NATIONAL FINALS

GENERAL:

  • All Regional Elite Top First, Top First and First place winners are eligible to participate in National Finals.
  • Each act that performs will receive a score from a panel of five to eight predetermined judges and the highest and lowest scores are dropped to determine the cumulative score.
  • National Elite Top First, National Top First and National First place general awards are presented in each age group and each category.
  • Acts MUST perform in scheduled order. Points may be deducted from acts that do no comply.
  • For National Finals, substitution of dancers from the Regional qualifying entry is permitted in all divisions/categories except Solos. Performances must be comprised of at least 50% of the original dancers from the Regional qualifying entry. When substituting dancers in a performance, be aware that any modifications may change the level or age average. Any dancers substituted remain subject to the Regional leveling and qualifying rules. All music must remain the same.

NATIONAL TITLE COMPETITION:

  • All 2018 Regional Title winners and Title runner-ups will be eligible to compete in the 2018 National Title Competition.
  • All National Title winners are ineligible to compete for the same Title division the following competition season. National Title winners may only re-compete the following season if they have moved up in age division.
  • Regional Title winners and Title runner-ups must compete with the same Title routine that was awarded at the 2018 Regional competition.
  • There must be at least 3 Title contestants in each division for the full cash prize to be awarded.
  • NATIONAL TITLE WINNERS MUST PARTICIPATE IN THE STAR SHOWCASE TO REDEEM CASH PRIZES.
  • ALL 2018 National Title winners are invited to participate in KAR’s Convention Assistant Program at any of the 2018 KAR Conventions.

OTHER AWARDS AND INFORMATION:

  • All “Most Photogenic” entries for National Finals must be submitted in FULL-COLOR.
  • All National “Most Photogenic” winning photographs will not be returned.
  • The INTERMEDIATE level is also eligible for “Judges’ Choice” awards at National Finals.
  • Each “Top Studio” winner at National Finals will be awarded a $250 cash prize and a trophy.
  • NEW: Any routine that placed first overall in the High Point Awards at National Finals and/or was awarded National Grand Champion in the 2017 Star Showcase cannot compete with that exact routine at a 2018 Regional or National Finals competition. To be considered the “exact routine”, the performance MUST (1.) contain 75% of the original dancers and choreography (2.) be registered in the same level and age division and (3.) utilize the original music selection. Any entry that does not comply may be disqualified.   
  • Awards NOT presented at National Finals are as follows: All Star Dancers, Video of the Week, Hollywood Dance Invitational, IDA Outstanding Performance Awards and IDA People’s Choice Award.

NATIONAL TITLE COMPETITION

The 2018 National Title Competition is a separate event held at National Finals with an additional entry fee. All Solos competing in the National Title Competition must be a 2018 Regional Title winner or runner-up. Dancers must compete with the same Title performance that was awarded at the Regional competition. If a Soloist qualifies with numerous routines from different Regionals, the Soloist may only compete with one of their performances at National Finals. All National Title contestants receive a participation tiara. Female runner-ups will be presented with a tiara, trophy and sash.  Male runner-ups will be presented with a cap, trophy, and sash. National Title winners will be presented with a tiara or cap, trophy, sash and a $250 cash prize. There must be at least 3 Title contestants in each division for the full cash prize to be awarded. Please contact our office for further details regarding cash prizes.  All National Title winners will be featured in the opening number at the Star Showcase. TITLE WINNERS MUST PARTICIPATE IN THE STAR SHOWCASE TO REDEEM CASH PRIZES.

STAR SHOWCASE – NATIONAL FINALS ONLY

At National Finals, the Top 5 scoring Small Groups (all ages combined) and the Top 5 scoring Large Groups/Lines (all ages combined) in the PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE levels will be invited to participate in the 2018 Star Showcase. These top scoring dances will re-compete for National Grand Champion in in each level and group division. Only one Group per studio can qualify in each Grand Champion division. The National Grand Champion divisions are as follows:

All Star Showcase performances will receive a participation banner. The highest scoring performance in each Grand Champion division will be awarded a cash prize and a National Grand Champion trophy. The Overall High Point NOVICE Group/Line, the highest scoring Super Line and the highest scoring Production are invited to re-perform for exhibition only at the 2018 Star Showcase. 

ADDITIONAL AWARDS FOR NATIONAL FINALS

CHOREOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS – These esteemed awards will be presented to the choreographers who have displayed exceptional choreography with their Group and Line performances at National Finals. The dances with the most nominations by the panel of judges will be deemed the winners of these awards. Each winner will be presented with a custom award at the Star Showcase. THESE AWARDS ARE GIVEN AT NATIONAL FINALS ONLY.
STUDIO OF THE YEAR AWARD – These prestigious awards are presented to the studios who receive the highest total amount of Top 5 High Point awards at National Finals. Each winner will be presented with a victory cup at the Star Showcase. THESE AWARDS ARE GIVEN AT NATIONAL FINALS ONLY.
STUDIO SPIRIT AWARD – This honorable award will be presented to the studio displaying the most studio spirit, enthusiasm and exceptional sportsmanship. The recipient of this award will be presented with a $150 cash prize and a “Studio Spirit” banner. THIS AWARD IS GIVEN AT NATIONAL FINALS ONLY.
FUTURE STAR AWARD – This distinguished award is presented to an individual dancer who displays exceptional dance abilities, showmanship and is a role model because of his/her superb sportsmanship and support of others. The recipient of this award will receive a custom award and a $100 cash prize. THIS AWARD IS GIVEN AT NATIONAL FINALS ONLY.
GRADUATING SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP – This exemplary award is presented to one graduating senior per National Finals who has excelled both on and off the stage. To be eligible for this award, a dancer must complete the official application process found on the KAR website. The winner of each scholarship is selected by the KAR Scholarship Committee. Each recipient will be presented with a $500 scholarship at the Star Showcase. THIS AWARD IS GIVEN AT NATIONAL FINALS ONLY.
 

2018 ADDITIONAL RULES & REGULATIONS FOR KAR LIVE EVENTS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE RULES BELOW COULD RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

FOR KAR LIVE ONLY
A SOLOIST MAY ONLY ENTER AND REGISTER 2 SOLOS PER DANCER.
We will not be giving any cash prizes during the regular competition for Small Groups, Large Groups or Lines. All cash prizes will be given out during the “KAR LIVE Showcase” as we have increased the cash prize amount and will be awarding $200 to the 1st Place KAR LIVE Champions.
 

KAR LIVE SHOWCASE

The top 3 scoring Small Groups in PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE and ELITE Levels, all age divisions combined will compete for the title of KAR LIVE Champion of the Small Groups.
The top 3 scoring Large Groups and Lines in PRIMARY, SECONDARY, INTERMEDIATE andf ELITE Levels, all age divisions combined will compete for the title of KAR LIVE Champion of the Large Groups and Lines.
A Special Judge’s Choice “Command Performance” will be selected by the panel of judges to represent their personal choice in the KAR Live Showcase. The performance cannot be one of the Top 3 already selected. It also needs to be from a different studio already represented in the Top 3.
A studio may only be represented once in each level of the small groups and once in the large groups/lines. If a studio has two routines with top scores only the highest scoring routine will be qualified to compete for the KAR LIVE Champion.
After each Showcase performance all dancers are invited back to the stage to receive their live commentary from the judges panel.
A total of 8 KAR LIVE Champions will be Awarded, with cash prizes for highest scoring performance selected by the panel of judges.

Secondary Small Group  – $200 – 1st Place
